Interactive Interstellar

For the record: I really, really liked the movie Interstellar. Or, at least, everything up to the stupid ending.

That aside, this is a really fun little website that lets you fly into and through the wormhole from the movie in 3D. Playing with the distortions of spacetime is fun and helps give you a tangible sense of how space itself can possibly be "bent."

PS: the black hole in the distance can be explored too...

Real Fake Money

“The bills [we used] looked pretty god awful…we had 28 factors that were different -- they said “In Dog We Trust,” for instance -- but the Secret Service is very clear on their definition of counterfeiting. Honestly, if you followed their instructions, you may as well use Monopoly money. Feature films demand a certain bar of quality, so everyone is asked to break law in a sense by making prop money.”

Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography

I think this is excellent, a break from the rut that autobiography falls into, creatively. If the way we remember someone is a collection of pieces we choose to remember (the parts of his or her life most meaningful to us) then why not give us control over the narrative? I'd love to see some debate about this. Maybe all the infinitely wise people on Reddit will get into a fascinating discussi-- what the hell am I saying? Anyway, here's the link.

An unusual solar eclipse.

In this video you can see the shadow of the moon pass over the earth. It's something you wouldn't normally be able to make out but the right combination of moon position and timing delivers awesomeness.

Link to NASA's Astonomy Picture Of The Day site (and the video): here.

From NASA:
"Have you ever experienced a total eclipse of the Sun? The above time-lapse movie depicts such an eclipse in dramatic detail as visible from Australia last month. As the video begins, a slight dimming of the Sun and the surrounding Earth is barely perceptible. Suddenly, as the Moon moves to cover nearly the entire Sun, darkness sweeps in from the left -- the fully blocked part of the Sun. At totality, only the bright solar coronaextends past the edges of the Moon, and darkness surrounds you. Distant horizons are still bright, though, as they are not in the darkest part of the shadow. At mid-totality the darkness dips to the horizon below the eclipsed Sun, created by the shadow cone -- a corridor of shadow that traces back to the Moon. As the total solar eclipse ends -- usually after a few minutes -- the process reverses and Moon's shadow moves off to the other side.Solar eclipses can frequently be experienced at gatherings organized along the narrow eclipse path as well as specialized cruises and plane flights."

The richest young people in America

6/19/2014

Insight into the experiences of growing up as heir to incredible estates. A fascinating portfolio of people who have reacted to, and defined themselves against, a fortune that is often hard to even fathom. If there was ever more conclusive proof that it's the meaning you create, not the meaning that you are given, that makes for a satisfying life, I haven't heard of it.

Personal aside: please, if you are super rich, use your money to help less fortunate people educate themselves. Or take up painting. It's a free country.

Born Rich (2003)
Directed and narrated by the heir to the Johnson & Johnson estate, Jamie.

This is how internet works in America. And Canada, but here it's slightly more polite about it.

You wouldn't think Disney could be this funny. This cartoon was made in '97 and disappeared for a while. It was recovered a few years ago and now you're watching it. Life is cool.

A really cool fake documentary from the future, where the economic balance of the world has shifted, and North America finds itself on the other end of consumer capitalism.

Several segments are online. The trailer is at the bottom.

Back when I originally stumbled across this film, I had no idea what I was in for. It remains one of my absolute favourite short films ever. Enjoy.
