Sewer Lid 2 hits the digital shelves with new fiction, poetry, and more. A part of that more is my piece "There Is No Plan A," in which I discover the wacky, thrilling, and affirming life of a quirky Toronto jazz lover/celebrity.

It's always exciting when new magazines launch, and when I got a call from them asking for submissions, dealing with life in the city as a theme, I had a great idea. It turned into the story "Moving," which I am very happy they chose to publish in the very first issue!

Check it out now, and explore some of the other really good pieces that made the cut.

Way back in my intro-to-creative writing class at York, I wrote a post-apocalyptic short story that I liked very much. It needed work though, and so it sat in my computer for years, getting picked at whenever I stumbled onto it again. Finally, for whatever reason, I dug it up and really finished it this year. I'm quite proud of it, and The Dalhousie Review likes it too. You can read it in issue 94.3.

I've returned to the Descant blog! This time I'm reviewing Grayling, which is a new novella from poet Gillian Wigmore that charts a journey down B.C.'s Dease River by canoe.

"In Grayling, Jay sets out in a canoe on the Dease River, trying to make a clean break from his past. A mysterious woman, Julie, saves him from hypothermia then talks her way into the canoe, interrupting his isolation and sending the trip in new directions. Throughout their voyage the book tries to navigate our relationships with intimacy, meaning and the wilderness itself."

Check it out here. Even a click through the link (the more links you click, the more it helps me out). Thanks!

A while ago a friend and I reviewed a talked-about new book of poetry together and this was the result. You can see what we had to say and the wonderful responses we got from the author herself.

All on the official Descant blog, which also just posted a list of interesting time-suck websites that will eat your day.

This spring, the excellent In The Hills magazine (not to be confused with In The Hills Landscaping, where I worked for a summer--also excellent) was generous enough to feature a very personal memoir I wrote about family, legacies and the march of progress. It was well received (phew) and can be viewed here:

I have a new poem in the seventh issue of The Fieldstone Review.
Check it out online, where my poem is wreathed in other wonderful poems. Better poems, even.

Also, another poem of mine is in the upcoming third issue of the lovely new lit journal The Quilliad.
The Quilliad is published in Toronto and has already featured a collection of upstart young writers.
The third issue launches with some readings (I'll be there) on June 7th.

Going way back (since I haven't submitted all that much in a while--life and stuff), here's a link to a short story I'm still fond of, in the pages of Steel Bananas. Go to page 85 for it (but read the other stuff too, as it is quite good).
